Randy Wolf excited to join 'young, talented' Orioles

Moments after striking out 10 in the Orioles’ 5-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, lefty Zach Britton was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. This makes room for left-hander Randy Wolf, who  will be activated tomorrow and added to the 25-man roster.

With major league rosters expanding on Saturday and Norfolk’s regular-season ending Monday, Britton could quickly return to the Orioles and take his regular turn in the rotation Tuesday.

Wolf, released by the Milwaukee Brewers Aug. 22, was added to the 40-man roster, which didn’t require a corresponding move. He is expected to be used primarily out of the bullpen.

“This is an exciting young team,” Wolf said. “A lot of talent. And to be right there in the thick of things in the AL East and right there in the wild card, it’s exciting.”

With this latest win, Britton is now 4-1 with a 4.80 ERA in eight starts with the Orioles this season.

A winner in his last three starts, he pitched to a 1.25 ERA with five walks and 21 strikeouts over that span.

He allowed seven hits and one earned run in eight innings against the White Sox on Thursday with no walks. His 10 strikeouts were also a career high.

“I felt really good the whole game, even in the second inning,” he said, referring to the four singles he surrendered in the inning, including Gordon Beckham’s RBI shot that scored  Dayan Viciedo. “I felt like I made some pretty good pitches, just a little up in the zone, and I was able to get down in the zone later in the game. So they were able to roll some balls, and I was able to get some strikeouts.”

Britton acknowledged that taking three of four games from the White Sox was big, especially with the Orioles opening a three-game series against the division-leading New York Yankees on Friday.

“It’s always good to get a win, going on a road trip like this,” he said. “The offense did great today and gave me a good cushion. So it’s easier to go out there and throw zeroes when you get a nice cushion. . .”
