Even though Steve Clevenger (Mount St. Joseph) and Johnny Monell have experience playing elsewhere, don’t expect to see either anywhere but behind the plate this spring as they compete for the backup catching job.
Bench coach John Russell, a former big league catcher, “gave them a really stern reminder about how this thing is going to go,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “What you hit is nice, but we don’t want to lose anything defensively. Both of these guys, you’ve got to watch them. They might take a glove and get out in the infield or whatever, but John’s told them: ‘I don’t want you hanging out at first base, second base, shortstop. You’re a catcher.’ ”
