Orioles' Eduardo Rodriguez has up-and-down outing in AFL debut

Orioles prospect Eduardo Rodriguez started and finished well in his first appearance for the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League on Wednesday.

He struggled in the middle, however, giving up two runs and three hits in the second inning.

The 20-year-old left-hander retired the side in order in the first and third, though, and the Saguaros came back for a 9-5 win over the Peoria Javelinas.

Rodriguez, who split the 2013 season between Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie, struck out the Javelinas' Delino DeShields (Houston Astros) and Tommy Medica (San Diego Padres) -- both looking -- in the first. He threw 35 of his 52 pitches for strikes.

Michael Ohlman, who batted eighth and served as the designated hitter for Surprise, was 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a double and two runs scored.

Ohlman, a 20-year-old catcher who played for Frederick in 2013, doubled to lead off the fifth inning and hit a one-out home run in the next inning. He walked in the top of the seventh before leaving for a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

Orioles prospect Jonathan Schoop -- batting second and playing shortstop for the second straight game -- was 0-for-4 with two walks and a run scored. He also committed a throwing error.

Right fielder Dariel Alvarez, who played at three levels in the Orioles' minor league system over the summer, was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored while batting ninth for Surprise.
