Astros RHP Bud Norris scratched from Tuesday's start vs. Orioles

The Houston Astros have scratched starting pitcher Bud Norris from Tuesday night's game against the Orioles at Camden Yards, believing they are closing in on trading the right-hander, according to numerous reports.

Houston right-hander Lucas Harrell, who held the Orioles to two runs (one earned) in a 4-1 loss on June 4, will replace Norris tonight. He will face Wei-Yin Chen (5-3, 2.78 ERA).

No deal involving Norris has been announced, and Houston manager Bo Porter said that Norris will start Wednesday if he isn't dealt.

Harrell, who started the season as the No. 2 starter for the Astros, was sent to the bullpen July 7. He is 5-10 with a 5.17 ERA this season. Harrell has appeared in 23 games, starting 19. Harrell held the Orioles to two runs, one earned, on five hits in a 4-1 Astros' loss on June 4 in Houston.

"They got an off day and Harrel’s pretty good," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "He’s been a starting pitcher all year for the most part. He pitched very well against us there. That’s why you come in during the off day and you grind over all their pitchers because you have no idea who’s going to be there. That’s why you make a certain batting order because you think a lot of innings could be pitched out of the bullpen. Originally off of Norris, I had eight left-handed hitters out there."

Showalter said he initially had a lineup that included eight left-handed bats to face Norris. Left-handed hitters are batting .306 against Norris.

The Orioles have been interested in Norris, who is 6-9 with a 3.93 ERA. He's the Astros' No. 1 starter. Norris has also been linked to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox.
