OAKLAND, CALIF. – Any question as to whether Oakland Athletics fans had forgotten about Manny Machado’s bat toss and confrontation with A’s third baseman Josh Donaldson last month were answered quickly Friday night in the Orioles' series opener here.
Oakland fans booed Machado every opportunity they got from pregame introductions to the first time he ran out to his position at third base in the bottom of the first inning. When Machado threw out Yoenis Cespedes to end the bottom of the third, the crowd booed from the time he fielded the ball all the way into the dugout.
When Machado stepped to the plate for his first at bat in top of the second inning, fans chanted “Manny Sucks” while waving large signs of Machado’s face – some with a pacifier in his mouth, others with tears on his cheeks – while beating on drums and shaking baby rattles.
One fan dressed like a baby, wearing an orange blanket and holding an orange baby bottle. A large group of fans waved signs that read “Machado Injury Report: Day to Day. Hurt Feelings.” The signs looked to be professionally made.
Machado flied out to left field in his first at bat.
