An Achilles injury led to Boston's DH playing just one game after July 16 last season. But before that, Ortiz, now 37, was having a monster season. In 90 games, he batted .318 with 23 HRs and 60 RBIs (despite his apparent disdain for then-manager Bobby Valentine).
Ortiz hasn't done much this spring as his heels continue to heal. He doesn't need too much movement to serve his role in the middle of the lineup, but if he's held out for an extended period, it would sap a considerable source of pop from the Red Sox lineup.
