All eyes on bullpen sessions on Day 2 of Orioles' workouts

The Baltimore Sun

The Orioles’ second workout for pitchers and catchers will begin at 10 a.m. Expect much of the same as Day 1, but a second group of pitchers will throw their first bullpen side sessions of the spring.

It's overcast here at the Ed Smith Stadium complex and there's an 80 percent chance of showers, but it looks like the Orioles will get their workout in before the storms arrive this afternoon.

We will get our first look at 2012 first-round pick Kevin Gausman. The Orioles’ No. 2 prospect behind right-hander Dylan Bundy will throw his first bullpen today.

Gausman said he hasn’t been told of any kind of inning limit for 2013, and he expects that he might not be told. But Orioles manager Buck Showalter said earlier this week that the organization plans to pace Gausman and Bundy so that they will be available to the big league club in September and October. Gausman threw 18 professional innings last season after a college season at LSU that included 123 2/3 innings.

Gausman's been here in Sarasota for two weeks now, working out with the minor league early minicamp. He's been spending this offseason honing his slider, and he might drop one or two in his 'pen session today.

Also throwing today will be reliever Pedro Strop, who will be leaving camp before the month is over to pitch for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. Strop said he’d like to get into two-to-three games before his leaves, but that might not be possible. Still, Strop -- who threw a career-high 66 1/3 major league innings last season -- said his offseason regimen has him prepared for the WBC. Orioles bullpen coach Bill Castro will be the pitching coach for the Dominican.

Another interesting pitcher to watch will be 19-year-old left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, a non-roster invitee who is the organization’s No. 3 pitching prospect. Rodriguez raised a lot of eyebrows last season at Class-A Delmarva, where he went 5-7 with a 3.70 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 107 innings.

Other pitchers slated to throw today include: Wei-Yin Chen, Jason Hammel and Chris Tillman in the first session; Miguel Gonzalez, Mark Hendrickson and Strop in the second session; Andrew McCutchen, Troy Patton and Daniel Schlereth in the third session; and Mike Belfiore, Gausman and Rodriguez.
