Orioles manager Buck Showalter said the team received good news about Manny Machado and his follow-up appointment Thursday in Los Angeles.
"Nothing's changed, but it's good news to hear somebody else say what our training staff is saying," Showalter said.
ESPN.com quoted Machado’s surgeon, Neal ElAttrache, as saying the third baseman’s left knee is “tracking normally” and Machado can continue with his rehabilitation. There is still no timetable mentioned in the report as to when he can play in games.
The Orioles anticipated that ElAttrache would give Machado clearance, but Showalter said previously all that would mean is that Machado could continue his rehab.
When Machado is ready – he has been held back from running for a week due to the release of scar tissue -- Showalter said it is likely Machado would play in minor league games so he can build up his at-bats. That also would make it possible to back-date a disabled list stint if necessary. Showalter said a decision to put Machado on the DL could wait until the team’s final exhibition game in Norfolk, Va.
The Orioles were irked in February when ESPN.com quoted the surgeon before anyone had informed the team about Machado’s progress. This exam was more routine.
** Infielder Alex Gonzalez has been held out of games waiting for results from an endoscopy and colonoscopy. Doctors saw something on Gonzalez’s physical that they wanted to investigate further, but he could be back as early as Friday.
** Showalter, his staff, executive vice president Dan Duquette and special assistant Lee Thomas met on Thursday afternoon to discuss the 25-man roster. Showalter said the club is still considering taking 13 pitchers north, but it is more likely that it will be 12 pitchers and 13 hitters.
“You got a Rule 5 decision, you got bullpen decisions that affect a lot of it,” Showalter said. “When we talk [about who is going] up there, we talk about the best 25.”
Some cuts could come Friday, Showalter said, but are more likely Saturday.
