Dan Connolly's 12 managerial candidates for the Orioles
But there are plenty of candidates out there who would love a shot to be in the fraternity of 30 big league skippers. Here are 12 names you could hear in the weeks to come (in alphabetical order).

Add / View comments | Discussion FAQWith no disresct to the candidates listed above - does anyone really believe that there is a manager alive (or dead) that could win with the 2010 edition of the Baltmore Orioles? Dave Trembley got a bum deal - being handed a team with Mike Gonzalez as a closer and Garrett Atkins at firstbase. Tejada is approaching the steep downward slope of his career, both fielding and hitting wise. Add the fact that Brian Roberfts is out of the season, Adam Jones is and was over-rated both offensively and defensively, Jim Johnson gets injured, etc. Simply put, there is no manager that could be successful with the Orioles' "talent."
I suggest that Juan Samuals stay on as manger - he is a good baseball man. The issue is how long do the Orioles want to go wtih the man who signed Gonzalez, Tejeda, and Atkins. This blame of this team's performance had to be directed to the front office and GM MacPhail. That MacPhail opted to buck the blame to Tembley says much more about MacPhail then Trembley.
A list of potential GM's would be much more useful. None of the guys above is going to win with this collection of O's.

A manager with some major league experience can't hurt . A former catcher looks like the right direction , they tend to be smarter about pitching staff , are less inclined to yank the starter after 5 and 1/3 thus tireing bullpen where O's need all the help they can get . Catchers see the whole field and know to position outfield when a move is needed . Lets pray the new skipper spends a great deal of time working on baserunning .The Orioles must put a true power hitter in cleanup spot ,30 or more homeruns is the yard stick not Miguel Tejada a huge mistake from day he was signed. Surely several power hitters will be available in the off season if not before . A Balance veterans and youth is worth a shot . Move the fences back or build a 30 foot wall around the outfield ,or AL EAST will keep mauling O's hurlers . Ok i need to snuggle with Tess ,she gets a little depressed between cases . Till next time your faithful esskaydog . PS leave shrimp alone till you know where it came from.
So out of these 12 candidates, we have, what, 3 guys with winning records? And 2 of them with some passion? I think that narrows the choices just a little.
RickWatson, you can't just hand the job to a great player and expect him to succeed. Firstly, hall of fame players have a track record of being lousy coaches. Secondly, the junior Ripken has zero managerial experience. I'm a huge fan of Cal, but I don't want to see him crash and burn.
