August 10, 2008: Sunday morning with Michael and George
Michael Phelps takes a moment before the start of the men's 400m individual medley final.
Sunday morning provided another early highlight here in Beijing as Michael Phelps looked overpowering while setting a world record in the men's 400m individual medly. The race also marked the first time that I had to shoot an event on deadline. Phelps' race started at 10:03am Sunday Beijing time, which is 9:03pm Saturday back in Chicago.
Swimming is being held at the National Aquatics Center, aka the Water Cube. The venue is gorgeous on the outside and photo-friendly on the inside. I always get worried when I shoot swimming. First off, I had to choose my photo position. The choices were finish line on the pool deck, an elevated photo position opposite of the pool deck spot, elevated end of pool looking at finish line and pool deck along the side of pool away from the finish line.
