Pierce, Garnett lead Celts' rout of Nuggets
Heat still winless; Cassell's 35 pace Clippers
Paul Pierce scored 26 points, Kevin Garnett added 23 points and 13 rebounds, and the host Boston Celtics shot 72 percent during an overpowering first half en route to a 119-93 victory over the Denver Nuggets last night.
Ray Allen added 22 points for the Celtics, who barely broke a sweat in building a 77-38 halftime lead.
Allen Iverson led the Nuggets with 22 points. Carmelo Anthony (Towson Catholic) was held to only 11 on 3-for-13 shooting.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers returned after missing a game because of the death of his father.
• Spurs 88, Heat 78 // Manu Ginobili scored 25 points, Tony Parker added 23, and host San Antonio kept Miami winless. The Heat, still without a recovering Dwyane Wade, is 0-4. Shaquille O'Neal led Miami with 17 points.
• Clippers 104, Pacers 89 // Sam Cassell (Dunbar) scored 35 points to lead Los Angeles (4-0) over host Indiana in a matchup of unbeaten teams. Los Angeles guard Cuttino Mobley left with an apparent groin injury in the first quarter and did not return.
• Jazz 103, Cavaliers 101 // Deron Williams made a layup with 1.3 seconds remaining, and host Utah overcame LeBron James' triple double and tying three-pointer. Carlos Boozer had 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Jazz. James finished with 32 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists.
• Hawks 105, Suns 96 // Josh Smith scored 22 points, Al Horford grabbed 15 rebounds to lead four Hawks in double figures, and Atlanta beat another 60-win team from last season. Steve Nash scored 34 points for Phoenix, which played its third straight game without Amare Stoudemire (knee).
• Magic 105, Raptors 96 // Hedo Turkoglu had 24 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, Rashard Lewis scored 24 points, and visiting Orlando beat Toronto. The Raptors' Chris Bosh scored 26 points.
• 76ers 94, Bobcats 63 // Andre Iguodala scored 19 points, Willie Green had 14 and host Philadelphia jumped on Charlotte early and never let up, sending the Bobcats back to .500.
• Grizzlies 105, SuperSonics 98 // Rudy Gay (Archbishop Spalding) overcame a cold start to score 25 points as visiting Memphis overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half to beat winless Seattle, giving the SuperSonics (0-5) their worst start in 38 years.
• Trail Blazers 93, Hornets 90 // Martell Webster and Jarrett Jack each scored 20 points, and host Portland earned its first victory of the season. David West had 34 points and 17 rebounds for New Orleans.
• Wizards // Gilbert Arenas' surgically repaired knee was drained for the second time in three weeks, forcing him to miss practice for a third consecutive day. However, coach Eddie Jordan expects Arenas to play against New Jersey tonight. Arenas said his knee felt stiff after Washington's 94-82 loss to Orlando on Saturday, and he hasn't practiced since.
• Pacers // Forward Ike Diogu tore his left calf muscle during practice Tuesday, and the team expects him to be out four to six weeks. Diogu averaged 13.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in the team's first three wins.
• All-Star Game // Phoenix will host the 2009 NBA All-Star Game at US Airways Center, the third time the city will hold the event.
