Welcome to The Big House

FAU's new stadium name is a marketing dream

So Florida Atlantic sold its stadium naming rights to a prison company, huh? What's that about? Do they want everyone to call it "The Big House?"

On twitter, the most embraced name would be "Owlcatraz". Or how about GEO Group Stadium at Prison Yards? Or call the stadium "The Pen"?

But shouldn't the fan experience at the stadium reflect the name that it bears?

FAU agreed to name FAU Stadium after the private prison company. The choices for nicknames are endless, so... what will you call the renamed stadium? If you have a good one, tweet it @dkurtenbach.

What's your favorite nickname for GEO Group Stadium?

    • The Pen
    • The Cell
    • The Slammer
    • The Bird Cage
    • Owlcatraz

Shouldn't they replace the seats being called sections and turn them into cell block numbers?

How about a new nickname to boot: Jailbirds?

And the FAU band to perfect "Jailhouse Rock?"

And — one more — visiting teams to be strip-searched on their way into the locker room?

Some will act priggish that the Boca Raton-based GEO Group is paying $6 million to put its name on the stadium for the next 12 years. Others will read the police blotter and realize this is an overdue idea.

And who knows? Maybe FAU coaches can use this to their recruiting advantage (did you see the prison-yard talent in "The Longest Yard?")

As you can tell, this is fertile ground for FAU to market the joint, the pen, the slammer or whatever it's nicknamed. Students can call their rowdy section "The Cell Block." The FAU uniforms won't just have blue in them — they'll be prison blues.

For years, football players and jail have carried bad connotations. Now FAU is being paid millions to change that. Good for them. Who says crime doesn't pay? And who says sports doesn't have a sense of humor?
