On the field: Physical, rugged performer who will have good coverage skills with a history as a cornerback in school. Can help covering tight ends in the slot. Plays the run well. Has very good size.
Upside: Bears plan to use Hardin immediately on special teams and coaches gave him "blue" rating in that area, their highest ranking. He can push for starting job after he learns defense but it's a projection right now.
Downside: Hardin started only 15 games in school and missed all last season with a broken shoulder. He also had a broken hand and sprained wrist while he was in school and now he's moving to a position that is more physically demanding.
Most resembles: It's hard to draw parallels for a player changing positions but if Hardin can pull it off another big safety who is playing well in the league is Kam Chancellor of the Seahawks.
Bio box: Oregon State safety Brandon Hardin
