Weekend football picks

OK, so what’s the over-under on the number of players who scrawl “APU” on their gear Saturday?

Whatever it is, I’ll take the under. Coaches have a way of stamping out messages they do not approve. Which is a shame.

On to the picks …

Miami (Ohio) (plus 24 1/2) at Illinois: The Cradle of Coaches hasn’t produced a good one since Terry Hoeppner. Illinois.

Wisconsin (plus 6 1/2) at Ohio State: Loved the Badgers at 71/2 points. Still like them, even though Joel Stave will be the third-best QB on the field. Wisconsin.

Iowa (minus 1 1/2) at Minnesota: Call me foolish, but the Hawkeyes’ 59-3 demolition of Western Michigan impressed me. Iowa.

Northern Illinois (minus 3 1/2) at Purdue: A curiously small line considering NIU is 39 spots higher in the Sagarin team ratings. Northern Illinois.

With only four Big Ten games on the slate, here are some bonus selections:

Mississippi (plus 14) at Alabama: Hugh Freeze beat Nick Saban for some recruits last year. Time for revenge. Alabama.

Oklahoma (minus 3 1/2) at Notre Dame: My in-depth analysis: I don’t think the Irish are all that good. Oklahoma.

USC (plus 4) at Arizona State: Count your days, Lane Kiffin. Arizona State.

LSU (plus 3 1/2) at Georgia: A sweet homecoming is in store for Tigers QB Zach Mettenberger. LSU in a classic.

Best bet: Alabama.

Last week: 3-7. Season: 20-25.

Best bets: 2-2.
