When does Tom Ricketts say no?
Carlos Zambrano went to Florida. Marlon Byrd went to Boston. Those deals alone put the Ricketts Money Buffet over $20 million, and now, here comes Carlos Marmol and his $16 or $17 million left for the next two years.
Good luck with that, Theo. Good luck with that in Ricketts’ office and good luck with that anywhere in baseball.
Because Marmol appears to be the worst of all possible situations for one of the worst and most expensive teams in baseball:
Even if Ricketts agreed to eat the remainder of the deal, Marmol is untradeable because the Cubs manager made it clear he’s also stupid or uncoachable, take your pick.
Marmol blew his nose all over Ryan Dempster’s outstanding start Thursday, walking the ballpark in a ninth inning that led to the Cubs’ losing it in the 10th. Manager Dale Sveum called out Marmol for throwing sliders with a 3-0 count and a 3-0 lead. Sveum wanted Marmol to throw more fastballs. But no. Marmol continued to throw sliders, even when his slider stunk, which has been most of this season and last, as well, when he tied for the major-league lead in blown saves.
So, he’s uncoachable, it appears.
No, wait, he could just be stupid.
Remember how Zambrano called out Marmol for the way he pitched to Ryan Theriot in St. Louis last year?
That was the famous “We stinks’’ rant that included criticizing Marmol for throwing, yes, his slider to Theriot when “we should know that Ryan Theriot is not a good fastball hitter,’’ Zambrano said.
Marmol should’ve thrown the fastball. Instead, he threw the slider. He got beat. The Cubs got beat. Sound familiar?
Zambrano was right. Marmol should’ve known better last year. Cubs management should’ve traded him this winter, or no later than spring training. Theo and his pals had to have been praying that Marmol didn’t stink the way he does. No dice. He doesn’t just stink, but he has left a stench since last season.
It doesn’t matter whether Marmol is stupid or uncoachable. He’s untradable either way.
So, Ricketts probably won’t be asked to eat the rest of the contract. He’ll simply be asked to vomit everytime Marmol warms up.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
