Division I men’s lacrosse week in review for teams in Maryland (March 5)

The Maryland and Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse teams picked up significant wins against ranked opponents over the weekend.

The No. 2 Terps held off No. 8 Notre Dame, 12-10, on Saturday, which will likely set up a matchup on Saturday between the top two teams in the Maverik Inside Lacrosse media poll in No. 1 Albany and Maryland. The No. 18 Blue Jays got off the schneid and walloped No. 20 Princeton, 16-9, on Saturday.

Both No. 9 Loyola Maryland and Navy improved to 2-0 in the Patriot League after defeating Holy Cross and Bucknell, respectively. And Towson outlasted UMBC, 8-6, and Mount St. Mary’s thumped VMI, 16-9, after falling at No. 17 Georgetown.

Here’s how the seven Division I teams from the state fared:

No. 2 Maryland

Record: 5-0

Previous result: Def. No. 8 Notre Dame, 12-10, on Saturday

Note: Senior midfielder Connor Kelly became only the fourth player in program history to score 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in a single game, and the Terps weathered a late rally to end a four-game losing skid to the Fighting Irish.

No. 9 Loyola Maryland

Record: 4-1, 2-0 in the Patriot League

Previous result: Def. Towson, 12-8, on Wednesday; def. Holy Cross, 13-5, on Sunday

Note: Junior attackman Pat Spencer (Boys’ Latin) accumulated seven goals and nine assists in two games and freshman attackman Kevin Lindley added 11 goals and one assist over the same span as the Greyhounds won their fourth game in a row.

No. 18 Johns Hopkins

Record: 2-2

Previous result: Def. No. 20 Princeton, 16-9, on Saturday

Note: Sophomore attackman Cole Williams (Loyola Blakefield) led the team with four goals, and senior Hunter Moreland (Boys’ Latin) set career highs in faceoff wins (20) and ground balls (14) to lift the Blue Jays to their first victory since Feb. 10.

Mount St. Mary’s

Record: 2-4

Previous result: Lost to No. 17 Georgetown, 16-6, on Tuesday; def. VMI, 16-9, on Saturday

Note: Sophomore attackman Brenden McCarthy’s career highs in both goals (five) and points (nine) proved instrumental in helping the Mountaineers win for the second time in their past three games.

Record: 3-2, 2-0 in the Patriot League

Previous result: Def. Bucknell, 13-8, on Saturday

Note: Three players produced five points and senior defenseman Michael Strack limited Bison senior attackman Will Sands to zero goals on three shots and a lone assist as the Midshipmen collected their third consecutive win.

Record: 2-3

Previous result: Lost to No. 9 Loyola Maryland, 12-8, on Wednesday; def. UMBC, 8-6, on Saturday

Note: Junior attackman Jon Mazza had a hand in seven of his team’s eight goals (five goals, two assists), and junior faceoff specialist Alex Woodall (St. Mary’s) went 15-for-18 (including 9-for-9 in the second half) with 11 ground balls to help the Tigers end a two-game losing streak.

Record: 1-3

Previous result: Lost to Towson, 8-6, on Saturday

Note: A pair of freshman attackmen, Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park) and Ben Keller, accounted for five goals on 14 shots, but the Retrievers’ inability to win faceoffs and collect more ground balls sent them to their third loss in a row.
