Men's lacrosse National Player of the Week (Feb. 13): Ian Laviano, Virginia

Ian Laviano, Virginia, freshman,

Laurel Hollow, N.Y., attackman

Almost a year after freshman midfielder Dox Aitken sparked Virginia to a 16-15 win against Loyola Maryland, the No. 10 Cavaliers earned another eye-opening performance from a rookie in their 13-12 double-overtime decision over the No. 12 Greyhounds on Saturday. After scoring two goals in the first half, the 5-foot-8, 175-pound Laviano had a hand in four goals of a 6-0 run that helped Virginia turn an 8-3 deficit in the third quarter into a 9-8 lead in the fourth. Laviano’s five goals were the most by a freshman in his debut in the program’s season opener since Kevin Pehlke scored five in 1990. And Laviano’s six points were the most by a Cavaliers rookie since Drew McKnight had two goals and four assists in 1997.
