NCAA Division I tournament semifinal preview: Duke vs. Maryland

NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse tournament semifinals

(At Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass.)

No. 4 seed Duke (15-3) at No. 1 seed Maryland (14-3)

When: Saturday, 2:30 p.m.

Coaches: John Danowski, Duke; John Tillman, Maryland

Players to watch: Justin Guterding, senior, attackman, Duke; Connor Kelly, senior, midfielder, Maryland

Outlook: Meeting for the first time since March 1, 2014, the Terps own a 62-20 advantage over the Blue Devils and have won the past two meetings in the tournament – in the 2011 and 2012 semifinals. Both top-10 offenses are sparked by Tewaaraton Award finalists in Maryland senior midfielder Connor Kelly (45 goals, 33 assists) and Duke senior attacman Justin Guterding (61 goals, 43 assists). And both top-20 defenses are anchored by fifth-year senior goalkeepers in the Terps’ Dan Morris (8.94 goals-against average, .529 save percentage) and the Blue Devils’ Danny Fowler (8.40 goals-against average, .538 save percentage). Maryland boasts a man-down defense that has killed 39 of 50 chances (.780), but the team would be wise to avoid giving Duke’s No. 6 extra-man offense (.500 on 17-for-34) too many opportunities. The team that controls the game’s tempo might earn a spot in Monday’s title game.
