UVa. players, alumni to raise money for daughters of ex-Bayhawks goalie Sanderson
Maryland's Andrew Whipple gets put flat on his back by Virginia as he attempts to take a shot with three seconds left in the second half of a March 28, 1998 game in College Park. Goalkeeper Chris Sanderson, left, and defenseman Penn Leachman guard the net; the Cavaliers were called for a holding penalty on the play. Sanderson and Virginia would go on to reach the NCAA quarterfinals before falling to Syracuse. (Baltimore Sun file photo / October 10, 2012)

The alumni game is set for 9:30 p.m. Friday on the lower practice field. Among the alumni committed to the event are a pair of Loyola High grads: Bayhawks attackman Ben Rubeor (2007), MVP of MLL’s 2012 Championship Weekend, and Steele Stanwick (2012), the 2011 Tewaaraton Award winner. Doug Tarring, an attackman from Virginia’s 1972 NCAA title squad, will coach the alumni team.
Also part of the weekend events will be a free youth clinic on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. The clinic will take place at the Park, which is the outdoor complex down past the law school and JAG school on Massie Road. Donations will be accepted; all proceeds will also go to the Chris Sanderson Memorial Trust. Youth players of all ages may attend the clinic; to sign up, contact Doug Knight at firstname.lastname@example.org. Rubeor and Stanwick will be among the clinic coaches.
Those wishing to donate but unable to make it to Charlottesville can do so here.
h/t to Matt D'Urso, who was a Cavaliers backup goalie behind Sanderson in the late '90s, for passing along the info. Inside Lacrosse also contributed.
