Fresh off winning the Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup, the U.S. women’s national team will return to the field for the first time on Oct. 12-13 in Annapolis and Towson.
Over the eighth annual Stars & Stripes weekend, Team USA will face four college teams that earned NCAA tournament bids in 2012: Georgetown, Navy, Stanford and Towson. ESPN3 will broadcast both games Oct. 13, with Team USA taking on Stanford and Towson at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The previous day’s games will be at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Admission is free for all games. Also on Oct. 12, Team USA will host a clinic for youth players in grades 3 to 12 from noon to 2 p.m. Clinic registration is available at uslacrosse.org/teamusa.
The U.S. women claimed a record eighth FIL World Cup title with a 19-5 win over Canada on July 20 in Oshawa, Ontario. The win capped a dominant 7-0 tournament run that saw the U.S. set World Cup records for victory margin (13.2 goals per game), goals in a tournament (127) and goals per game (18.1).
U.S. coach Ricky Fried of Columbia, currently entering his ninth season at the helm of Georgetown’s women’s program, will coach against his Hoyas squad, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2012.
Manhatttan hires ex-Greyhound Weber as coach
Former Loyola Maryland women’s player Elizabeth Weber has been named Manhattan coach, the school announced today.
Weber comes to Manhattan after serving as coach at Division II Holy Family in Philadelphia, which she led to a 27-9 record and two consecutive conference championships.
Weber has also held assistant coaching positions at Villanova and La Salle. At Holy Family, Weber guided the Tigers to consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championships in 2012 and 2013. The 2012 conference title, the first in the program’s history, came after the team had a 7-10 record in 2011. Weber guided the squad to a seven-win improvement in 2012 as the Tigers posted a 14-4 mark. In 2013, Holy Family captured its second straight conference championship and finished with a 13-5 record.
Weber was also an assistant coach for the Greyhound Lacrosse Club in Baltimore and also served as an intern in the Loyola athletic communications office.
Centennial's Mathews takes assistant job at William & Mary
William & Mary has announced the hiring of Amanda Mathews (Centennial) as an assistant coach. While Mathews will be instrumental with both defensive and offensive strategy, her primary responsibilities will also include recruiting, team travel arrangements and acting as the community service coordinator.
Mathews joins the Tribe after a standout playing career at James Madison, which she helped earn a pair of NCAA tournament appearances. A three-year starter, she served as a team captain during her senior season and was selected to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Tournament team last spring. As a senior at Centennial, she received Baltimore Sun All-Metro honorable mention.
Vermont announced that Meredith Moore (Loch Raven) and Emma Tizard (Maryvale Prep) will join the team for the 2014 season. Moore was named a Baltimore County All-Star and made the Baltimore County All-Division Team her senior season. Tizard, meanwhile, earned Towson Times honorable mention her senior season and helped lead her team to the 2012 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship game. ... Former Wasington College assistant coach Juli Liebig has been named an assistant at Division III Rhodes in Memphis, Tenn., for the 2014 season. Liebig was also an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Shorewomen and will be serving in a similar role in her new job. While attending Queen Anne’s County High, Liebig participated in lacrosse, basketball, soccer and swimming at Queen Anne’s and was a two-time recipient of the Queen Anne’s Master of All Sports.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
