UMBC women’s lacrosse co-coach Tony Giro has been on the phone with Maryland coach Cathy Reese over the past few days trying to decide what to do about their season opener scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday – during what could be a significant snow storm.
Finally, they opted to postpone the game until 2 p.m. Friday at UMBC Stadium. It was originally rescheduled for noon Friday.
“I just said we can’t control Mother Nature,” Giro said. “We were thinking about doing it [Tuesday], but we couldn’t get it in because of logistics. Obviously [Thursday] looks like it could be a complete wash and our field won’t be able to get cleared and their facility won’t be ready, so we decided to just do it on Friday. That would give us the best chance to get everything ready.”

UMBC is coming of an 8-8 season hampered by injuries. The Retrievers started the 2013 season 7-2, their best opening stretch since 1986, but even with all the injuries, they barely missed qualifying for the four-team America East Tournament.
Maryland, ranked No. 2 in preseason, reached the national final last spring and fell in the longest game in NCAA Tournament history, 13-12 to North Carolina in triple overtime. That was the Terps’ only loss of the season as they finished 22-1.
The Terps defeated UMBC last year, 17-10, but the Retrievers were within 9-5 at the half. Maryland has won all eight meetings between the two programs
To get ready for Friday’s game, snow removal should be fairly easy because UMBC Stadium has an artificial turf field. Giro, Retrievers co-coach with Amy Appelt, said the only issue could be freezing rain. He's happy they could reschedule so soon.
“We’re just lucky we have the convenience of proximity to College Park and that we have a relationship with them that allows us to reschedule so quickly,” he said. “If we were any further apart, we probably wouldn’t have been able to work it out.”
