Reaction from Maryland men's lacrosse coach John Tillman

The 18-team field for the NCAA tournament was announced Sunday night, and Maryland drew the seventh seed.

The Terps (11-3), who captured a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship, will host Cornell (11-4) on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Byrd Stadium in College Park.

Here is a sampling of Tillman’s reaction just minutes after the bracket was unveiled.

On Maryland getting the No. 7 seed:

We didn’t know what to expect. We were hoping for a home game just by the nature of being back at Byrd. That’s always great. But we kind of knew that it was going to be a tough team whoever we played and depending on what got weighted, we felt like if we were in that top eight, we could understand why they put us in one place or the other, and there were a lot of teams that were pretty close. If you look at the resume with the RPI and the wins and the strength of schedule, I think it was just going to be a matter of what did they really focus on. What were the things that they really felt were important?

On getting paired up with the Big Red, who knocked off the Terps, 16-10, in the first round of the 2013 tournament:

We certainly felt like we might have been matched up with Cornell or Albany or Johns Hopkins or maybe another ACC school. We knew that could be a possibility.

On facing a first-time opponent rather than being involved in a rematch:

We knew there was a chance we could play somebody for a second time, but I do think when you talk to most Division I lacrosse players, when the postseason hits, they like playing teams outside of their league just because they’re teams that they normally don’t see, and there’s a freshness there, a newness. Although they’re going to be really talented and they’re going to be challenging, I think they’re thinking, ‘Well, it’s somebody different. Although they’re really good, they’re different.’ … I think that freshness for young people is kind of fun for them. For the coaches, it may not be as fun.
