Freshman midfielder Ara Atayan of Bronxville (N.Y.) High has committed orally to North Carolina, becoming the first boys lacrosse player in the class of 2017 to publicly make such a commitment.
Atayan was one of the standout players at the Nike Blue Chip camp in July; he also plays for the Long Island Express club team. A junior varsity player at Bronxville last season, Atayan was the team's offensive Most Valuable Player and had 52 points.

Erik Krum (Salisbury) and former Chesapeake Bayhawk Johnny Christmas had four goals apiece Saturday to lead Maverik United to a 20-19 win over Team STX as the LXM Pro Tour began its fall schedule in Orem, Utah.
The win was the second of the year on the tour for Maverik, which led 10-8 at the half and got an assist from Christmas. Xander Ritz had four goals and brother Max, a fellow former Maryland player, finished with three goals and two assists to help lead Team STX. That squad also got three goals and an assist from Davey Emala (Gilman), three goals from Sam Bradman (Salisbury) and a goal and two assists from Kyle Harrison (Johns Hopkins, Friends).
Johnny Rodriguez (Salisbury) made 13 saves to earn the win for Maverik, while counterpart Matt Russell (Navy) had 17 for STX.
Ex-Greyhound Acton named to Canada training roster for world championship
Loyola Maryland graduate Reid Acton was one of 51 players named to the Canadian national training roster; he will vie for a spot to represent his country at the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships next July in Commerce City, Colo.
The two-time All-America defenseman was recently selected in the third round of the National Lacrosse League draft by the Minnesota Swarm.
Stevenson will host the third annual Meghan Puls Lacrosse Classic at 10 a.m. Oct.20 at Mustang Stadium in Owings Mills. This year's tournament features the host Mustangs as well as Goucher, Virginia Wesleyan, Franklin & Marshall and Cabrini. Admission is free; a donation of $5 at the gate would be appreciated. All donations and proceeds will benefit the Meghan C. Puls Foundation Inc., which helps families and children through supporting organizations in the areas of health services and research, youth recreation and education. ... Johns Hopkins will host the third annual “Stick It to Sarcoma” event Sunday in combination with the team's Blue Jay Invitational. Louisville, George Mason, Rutgers and Team STX also will participate.
