Lyle Thompson, Albany, sophomore (Feb. 22)( University of Albany / March 10, 2012 )
Onondaga Nation, N.Y., attackman
The Great Danes opened the season with a victory for the first time since 2007 on the strength of a standout performance from Thompson. The 6-foot, 180-pound attackman had two goals and six assists to propel Albany to a 16-15 double-overtime win against then-No. 13 Syracuse. Thompson was instrumental on the game-winning goal, threading a pass to brother Miles, a junior attackman, 57 seconds into the second extra session. The win was the Great Danes' first against the Orange in 11 attempts and gave Syracuse its first season-opening loss since 1996.
