The Loyola Maryland and Navy women's lacrosse teams will battle for the Patriot League championship this weekend, but maybe they should stage an academic competition as well.
Two players from each team were named to the Patriot League All-Academic team Wednesday. Loyola's Marlee Paton and Katherine Reinhard and Navy's Jill Coughlin and Katie Gallagher made the 12-player team; to be considered, players must have at least a 3.2 GPA and be a starter or top reserve.
McDonogh graduate Katelyn Miller, a senior midfielder at Bucknell, was the conference Scholar-Athlete for the third straight year, carrying a 3.91 GPA as a biology major.
Paton, a senior and the Patriot League Midfielder of the Year, had a 3.45 GPA in communications with a specialization in advertising and public speaking and a minor in marketing. The Australia native and two-time World Cup player ranks fourth among active players in points with 264 and will rank in the top six of Loyola career records for goals, assists, points and caused turnovers.
Reinhard, who is also majoring in communications, although with a specialization in journalism and a minor in marketing, has a 3.56 GPA. A senior defender from New Jersey, she anchors a unit allowing just 8 goals per game, 11th best in the NCAA. She has 15 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.
Navy senior Coughlin carries the second-highest GPA on the All-Academic team at 3.85. She has earned a 4.0 in her honors oceanography major for five straight semesters. The St. Mary's graduate ranks third on the lacrosse team in scoring and became the tenth player in program history to record 100 points in her career.
Gallagher, a sophomore from C. Milton Wright, also majors in oceanography and has a 3.31 GPA. She has recorded at least one point in every game this season and is second in assists with 18 and points with 38.
Miller is the first women's lacrosse player ever to earn three Scholar-Athlete Awards. She is just the 16th person in conference history in any sport to earn it three times.
Headed for the University of Maryland Dental School, the senior worked as an orthodontic technician last year and worked in the department of research at Johns Hopkins the year before. She has also served as a student athletic trainer at Bucknell since 2011.
As an athlete, Miller is a three-time All-Patriot League second-team choice. She ranks second on the Bisons' all-time points list with 177. She's fourth in assists (50), second in caused turnovers (101) and third in draw controls (139).
