The defending NCAA champion Loyola men’s lacrosse team will open its 2013 season with a pair of road games before beginning its home schedule on Saturday, Feb. 23, with a rematch of the national title game against Maryland, Greyhounds coach Charley Toomey announced Thursday.
“This is the most aggressive schedule that we’ve put together here at Loyola,” Toomey said. “I think it’s great that we have Maryland to open our home schedule, and we have a very difficult group of nonconference games that will test us and prepare us for an always-challenging ECAC schedule.”
After a trio of exhibition games – Jan. 27 against the U.S. national team at the Champion Challenge in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Feb. 2 at North Carolina and Feb. 9 at home versus Harvard – the Greyhounds will open the regular season at Delaware on Saturday, Feb. 16, before taking on Towson three days later just up the road on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Loyola will play the first of three straight home games when the Terrapins visit Ridley Athletic Complex for the first time. Last year, the Greyhounds won their first NCAA Division I championship in any sport by topping Maryland, 9-3, on Memorial Day at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
The 2013 rematch will mark the first regular-season game between the two since Loyola defeated the Terrapins, 10-8, on March 19, 1989. Prior to that, the teams had not played since 1959.
After the game against Maryland, Loyola will again play three days later, welcoming UMBC on Tuesday, Feb. 26. The Greyhounds will close their homestand on Saturday, March 2, when they open Eastern College Athletic Conference play against Bellarmine.
Five straight road games in four states and Washington will follow, starting with a Friday, March 8 contest at Duke. The Greyhounds finish their regular-season slate on the road with a Saturday, April 20, contest against Hobart and then a Saturday, April 27, date at Johns Hopkins.
Game times will be released at a later date.
