Injury continues to shroud Jeff Chase in mystery for Loyola

When Jeff Chase committed to Loyola as a member of the Boys’ Latin lacrosse team, the Greyhounds thought they were getting one of the country’s premier midfielders.

The program is still high on the Monrovia native, but it’s unclear what Chase can provide because of yet another injury.

Chase, an Under Armour All-America selection in his senior year, redshirted last season because of an unspecified injury, and another ailment has delayed his return to the practice field this winter, according to coach Charley Toomey.

“I don’t want to get into what he’s battling, but he’ll be back,” Toomey said, adding that he’s unsure if Chase will be available for the team’s season opener on Feb. 16 at Delaware. “He’s not going to the hospital. He’s day-to-day with the trainers.”

Loyola was hoping that Chase would be able to showcase his talent this season. In fact, Toomey had initially tabbed Chase as a contender to replace Eric Lusby as one of the team’s three starting attackmen.

“We’re still waiting to get Jeff Chase healthy,” Toomey said. “He’s a newcomer to us because he redshirted last year. I think his best lacrosse is yet to come. He just needs to play a couple weeks at full strength.”
