Duke men’s lacrosse head coach John Danowski announced Thursday that redshirt senior defenseman Casey Carroll will miss the 2013 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The procedure was performed Monday by Dr. Claude T. Moorman III, Duke’s director of sports medicine.

Carroll returned to the Blue Devils for a fifth year of eligibility after serving five years as an Army Ranger. He previously played for Duke from 2004-07, earning first team All-America honors his senior season.

Navy women picked first in Patriot

For the third straight season, the Navy women's lacrosse team has been picked to finish first in the Patriot League preseason poll, the league office announced Thursday.

Navy was the unanimous choice by the opposing league coaches and sports information directors, garnering all 12 of the possible first-place votes. Coaches and sports information directors cannot vote for their own team.

The Mids received 72 points to top the preseason poll and were followed by Holy Cross (55), Colgate (44), Lehigh (39), American (38), Lafayette (34) and Bucknell (12). Navy defeated Holy Cross, 18-11, in the 2012 Patriot League tournament final.

For the second straight season, senior attacker Jasmine DePompeo has been selected as the league's Preseason Player of the Year. DePompeo scored a league-best 92 points in 2012 on 45 goals and a school-record 47 assists. DePompeo is a two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and a two-time all-conference first-team selection.

DePompeo also appears on the inaugural Preseason All-Patriot League Team and the Mids lead the conference with four preseason all-league selections.

Sophomore midfielder Jess Fellows is on the team after earning all-league second-team honors as a freshman in 2012. Fellows scored 47 points on 34 goals and 13 assists and also had 28 ground balls, 19 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers.

Senior Brijet Mall represents Navy as a defender. Mall emerged as a full-time starter in 2012, scooping 19 ground balls, causing 13 turnovers and controlling four draws.

Navy's final preseason all-league honoree is senior goalie Michelle Verbeeck. Verbeeck played in 20 games last season and started the final seven. Verbeeck (8-1) posted an 8.15 goals-against average and a .484 save percentage, leading the Patriot League in both categories.

The Mids will open the season against Winthrop at home on Sunday, February 10 at noon.
