Maxx Davis fills in at goalie, leads STX to win over Maverik in LXM Pro

After an early hand injury to starting goalie Matt Russell (Navy), Maxx Davis (Friends, UMBC) moved from his usual midfield spot to the cage, making 15 saves to lead Team STX to a 19-13 win over Maverik United on the LXM Pro Tour on Saturday. The game was played at Cocoa (Fla.) High, near Cape Canaveral on Florida's eastern coast.

In earning game Most Valuable Player honors, Davis put to use his skills from his days playing goalie earlier in his career and from shooting practices in net with fellow teammates like Kyle Harrison (Friends, Johns Hopkins) throughout the 2013 Tour.

Sam Bradman (Salisbury) scored a team-high five goals in the win, while Harrison added four and an assist and Max Ritz (Maryland) chipped in three goals and two assists.

Ignited by Davis’ first few saves in the second quarter, Team STX went on a six-goal streak, with Bradman notching a natural hat trick, Geoff Worley ripping a behind-the-back goal off a look from Xander Ritz (Maryland), and brother Max Ritz (Maryland) scoring off a swim dodge from up top. Maverik's Erik Krum (Salisbury) broke the streak with his fifth goal of the night, and STX led at halftime 11-7.

STX scored four unanswered goals late in the third quarter, from Harrison, his fourth of the night; Max Ritz, who had two in the run; and hometown hero Mike Von Kamecke (Salisbury), who is from Winter Park, about 45 minutes from Cocoa. The third quarter closed with Team STX ahead 17-8.

Max Ritz had three goals and two assists for STX, while his brother had three assists.

For Maverik, former Chesapeake Bayhawk Jonny Christmas finished with two goals and an assist.

With STX leading the series 6-3, the LXM Pro Tour will resume Jan. 4 at the Adrenaline Challenge, which is also a major youth recruiting event, in Del Mar, Calif.
