Conference tournaments set for Loyola, Towson and UMBC

Loyola, Towson and UMBC learned their seeding in their respective conference tournaments, which will take place later this week.

The No. 7 and reigning national champion Greyhounds (11-3) earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament. Despite finishing with an identical 6-1 league record as No. 6 Denver (11-3), the Pioneers got the top seed due to a head-to-head tiebreaker stemming from their 13-12 overtime decision against Loyola on April 13.

The Greyhounds will face No. 8 Ohio State (10-3 overall and 5-2 in the ECAC) in one semifinal scheduled for Thursday, May 2 at 8 p.m. at Hobart in Geneva, N.Y. Loyola defeated the Buckeyes, 9-4, on March 30.

The other semifinal will pit Denver against No. 20 Fairfield (8-6, 4-3).

The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 4 at 4 p.m. The Greyhounds won last year’s tournament crown.

No. 15 Drexel and Towson already knew they would meet in one semifinal of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament as they were locked into the No. 2 and 3 seeds, respectively, before this past weekend.

The Dragons (11-3, 5-1 in the CAA) and the Tigers (8-7, 4-2) will meet Wednesday, May 1 at 5:30 p.m. at Penn State in University Park, Pa. Drexel won the regular-season contest between these teams, 14-11, on April 20.

No. 9 Penn State (11-3, 6-0) will face Massachusetts (7-7, 2-4) in the other semifinal.

The tournament final is scheduled for Friday, May 3 at 3 p.m. Towson is seeking its first title since capturing three straight from 2003-05.

UMBC corralled the No. 3 seed in the America East tournament after edging Binghamton, 10-9, Saturday. Both the Retrievers (6-7) and Hartford (7-6) finished with 3-2 league marks, but the Hawks earned the higher seed as a result of nipping UMBC, 15-14, in overtime on March 30.

The Retrievers and Hartford will play Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Stony Brook in Stony Brook, N.Y., and the winner will move onto the championship game on Saturday at 10 a.m. UMBC is seeking its first tournament crown since winning two straight from 2008-09.

No. 10 Albany (11-4, 5-0) will meet Stony Brook (7-8, 2-3) in the other semifinal.
