The Hamilton Nationals traded defensive midfielder Dan Burns (Severna Park, Maryland) to the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Friday, the day Major League Lacrosse's 23-man rosters were released. The Bayhawks sent midfielder John Austin, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2013 supplemental draft and the No. 15 selection in the 2013 Collegiate Draft to Hamilton in return. Also, the Boston Cannons traded a fifth-round pick in the 2014 Collegiate Draft to the Bayhawks for midfielder Brent Adams.
Burns, a Baltimore resident, is one of the league's fastest players and will add depth to a Bayhawks defensive midfield corps that includes Matt Abbott and Jeff Reynolds, who could be tied up with National Lacrosse League commitments during the first part of the 2013 MLL season.
The 23-man Bayhawks roster also includes attackmen Danny Glading, John Grant Jr., Matt Mackrides, Ben Rubeor (Loyola High) and Drew Westervelt (John Carroll, UMBC); midfielders Matt Abbott, Steven Brooks, Kyle Dixon (Archbishop Spalding), Ben Hunt (Severna Park), Michael Kimmel (Loyola High, Johns Hopkins), Adam Rand, Jeff Reynolds (Calvert Hall, Maryland) and Alex Smith (St. Paul's); defensemen Barney Ehrmann (Gilman), Michael Evans (South River, Hopkins), Dan Hostetler (River Hill), Nicky Polanco, Michael Simon (Fallston, Stevenson) and Brian Spallina; and goalies Kip Turner (Severn), TC (cq) DiBartolo (Spalding, Mount St. Mary's) and Tyler Fiorito (McDonogh).
Midfielder Jake Bernhardt, who hurt his shoulder during the 2012 preseason at Maryland and received a medical redshirt, was protected by Hamilton. If not protected, he would have been eligible to be picked by another team during the Collegiate Draft.
