Fact: Albany (2-2) is averaging 17 goals per game, the most in the nation. Lyle Thompson is scoring a mind-boggling 7.3 points per game. Opinion: The Great Danes are scheduled to play 14 games and will reasonably play 18 with two in the America East tournament, an NCAA play-in game and perhaps an NCAA first-round game. Based on 14 games, Thompson comes up short of the record for points in a season (118 by UMBC's Steve Marohl in 1992). But if Thompson plays in 18, he is on par to score 131 points, smashing the record. Albany is at Hopkins on April 4. Albany is ranked No. 1 in assists per game but No. 57 in scoring defense. The Great Danes refuse to play slow-down lacrosse. It's a thing of beauty to watch the Thompson trio zing the ball around the backyard. In this era of overcoaching, it's refreshing and rare to see coach Scott Marr play to his team's strengths by letting players run free and take chances.
