You hear the name Belichick, you think football.
But the truth is that lacrosse is just as big in the household of New England Patriots coach and Annapolis High grad Bill Belichick.
On Thursday came the news that Bill's daughter Amanda Belichick has been appointed interim head coach at Wesleyan, her alma mater, for the 2014 season.
Following in her father's footsteps, Belichick has coached since her four-year lacrosse career at the Middletown, Conn., school ended in 2007. She spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Ohio State and serving as an assistant at UMass Amherst in 2010, when the program captured its second straight Atlantic-10 title.
An attacker at Wesleyan, Belichick finished with 47 goals and 25 assists during her career, including a 52-point season in 2006.
Bill Belichick also is a Wesleyan alum, having graduated in 1975. Both Amanda and Bill were lacrosse captains at Wesleyan as seniors.
Bill's son Stephen played defense at Rutgers and is now on the Patriots staff, and Bill is close friends with longtime Johns Hopkins coach Dave Pietramala.
Settembrino returning to UMBC men as assistant
Former UMBC defenseman and Binghamton assistant Steve Settembrino is returning to his alma mater as an assistant. He'll replace Ed Stephenson, who last week was named head coach at Massachusetts-Lowell, which will begin Divison I play in 2015.
Settembrino's hiring coincides with the promotion of assistant Andy Gallagher, another Retrievers alum who's been a part of head coach Don Zimmerman's staff since 2009.
Lehigh women hire South River's Kolarik
The Lehigh women's lacrosse team has announced the addition of former standout Virginia goalie Kim Kolarik (South River) to the coaching staff.
Kolarik, who graduated in May, has extensive coaching experience. The past two years, she's served as co-head coach for Chesapeake Club Lacrosse based in Annapolis. She was primarily responsible for the instruction of the goalies. A year earlier, she was a goalie coach for the Charlottesville Lacrosse Club in Virginia.
Kolarik, who was nominated last for the Tewaaraton Award, given to the top college player, was an Under Armour All-American and one of Sports Illustrated's Top 100 girls lacrosse players at South River.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
