Bombers lose to Stickhorses, 10-9 in OT, fall to 2nd place in NALL

Dwayne Porter scored at the 12-minute mark of overtime to lift the host Kentucky Stickhorses to an 11-10 win over the Baltimore Bombers on Sunday afternoon at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky.

The loss dropped the Bombers (3-2) to second place in the North American Lacrosse League behind the Boston Rockhoppers, who defeated the Rhode Island Kingfish, 20-7, on Saturday.

Forward Matt Hickman (Salisbury) scored the final four goals for the Bombers on Sunday, including one that tied it at 10 with 5:46 left; he finished with a game-high five points. Forward Andrew Wasik added two goals and an assist in the loss.

The fourth quarter was back-and-forth after the Stickhorses (2-3) entered it with an 8-7 lead; they were ahead 5-4 at the half.

The game started as a back-and-forth defensive battle with a surprising amount of transition breaks for both teams in their second game within 48 hours (the Bombers won, 17-13, on Friday night). The lone first-quarter goal was off a breakaway by Ryan Maciaszek for Kentucky.

Both teams got their offenses going in the second quarter, and Baltimore capitalized on Kentucky penalties in the third quarter, including a five-minute major penalty for a high hit by Maciaszek.

After scoring six goals in Friday's win, Hickman returned to form. After his final goal tied it at 10, Kentucky had to kill a roughing penalty on defenseman Josh Kacprzak to preserve the tie and send the game to overtime.

Penalties played a role in overtime, as the Bombers were assessed a penalty for too many players on the floor, resulting in a penalty shot. Baltimore's Ginny Capicchioni made one of her several remarkable saves in the game on Jesse Guerin's try.  Kentucky's Spencer Lyons likewise made some impressive stops late in the game and in overtime to set up Porter's game-winning shot on an assist from Travis Bland.

The Bombers return to action when they host the Rhode Island Kingfish at 8 Saturday night at Du Burns Arena.
