Notre Dame High defeats Loomis Del Oro, 41-24

Notre Dame High's Lucas Alfonso makes field goals from 50 and 49 yards to help the Knights win in Oceanside. Also, Westlake Village Oaks Christian beats Upland, 57-28.

Some things never change in high school football. The Trinity League is always good. Corona Centennial's offense scores lots of points. And Sherman Oaks Notre Dame has a top kicker.

Following the path of NFL kickers Nick Folk and Kai Forbath, Lucas Alfonso had field goals from 50 and 49 yards on Saturday to help the Knights defeat Loomis Del Oro, 41-24, in the Honor Bowl at Oceanside High.

Like Folk and Forbath, Alfonso is a student of former Notre Dame and UCLA All-American kicker Chris Sailer. Alfonso didn't attempt a field goal last week in Notre Dame's win over Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, so he was waiting for his chance.

"It's nice having a coach who trusts you to kick field goals, especially long ones like that," Alfonso said.

There was much to like about Notre Dame's performance. Grant Kraemer, a backup receiver last season, continues to blossom as a quarterback. He had touchdown passes of 56 and 45 yards to Daniel Khan and finished with 228 yards passing. Khan caught six passes for 157 yards. Koa Farmer had touchdown runs of 23 and eight yards.

Next up for Notre Dame (2-0) is a showdown game with Gardena Serra (2-0) on Friday at Serra.

Also at Oceanside, Westlake Village Oaks Christian (2-0) cruised to a 57-28 victory over Upland (0-2). D.J. Riggins scored four touchdowns and quarterback Brandon Dawkins completed 21 of 29 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns. Chris Davis caught 11 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Offensive fireworks

It's like the old days at Newhall Hart (2-0), where the offense has scored 56 and 55 points in consecutive victories, and the statistics are simply stunning.

During summer seven-on-seven passing competitions, when Hart was rolling past teams, skeptics wondered how the offense would do when pads went on and an offensive line had to block. The answer: the Indians are just as good, if not better. Linemen Blake Porter and Erik Stafford, three-year starters, have been terrific.

In a 55-54 overtime win over West Hills Chaminade, junior quarterback Brady White was 38 of 53 passing for 490 yards and seven touchdowns, tying the school record set by Kyle Boller. "To be up with those NFL guys like Boller — it's a dream of mine," White said.

Running back Connor Wingenroth rushed for 186 yards in 21 carries, including a school-record 99-yard touchdown run. He caught seven passes for 78 yards and one score. Trent Irwin had nine receptions for 179 yards and three touchdowns. Davis Koppenhaver had 13 catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

Double threats

San Clemente is relying on 6-4 junior quarterback Sam Darnold just as it once did with Travis Wilson, now at Utah. Darnold passed for 175 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 176 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-32 win over Long Beach Cabrillo.

Another junior quarterback, Travis Waller of Anaheim Servite, ran for 176 yards and passed for 144 yards in the Friars' 31-24 upset of Long Beach Poly.

L.A. Roosevelt quarterback David Arriaga ran for 243 yards and three touchdowns in a 48-41 win over Sylmar.
