Wichita, Kan.—Texas Christian University's Bryan Holaday was named the 2010 Johnny Bench Award winner at the 13th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet, Thursday July 1st at the Hyatt Regency of Wichita.
Holaday was chosen over the University of Miami's Yasmani Grandal and Coastal Carolina University's Jose Iglesias. The award is given to the most outstanding collegiate catcher in the nation voted on by Division I baseball coaches.
His coaches say, "He has an infectious work ethic," and helped TCU make it to their first NCAA College World Series appearance, falling to UCLA in the semi-finals.
"We really strived to get to Omaha and we had a great team and I am really proud of them," Holaday said following the ceremony. "Obviously, the individual accolades come after the team but our team being so good is the reason why I'm here."
Holaday ranked in the top ten in the Mountain West Conference in slugging percentage (.599), hits (90), doubles (23), home runs (13) and gave up only two passed balls.
He was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the sixth round of the 2010 Major League Draft.
