The Wichita State Shockers started their first Missouri Valley Conference series with a bang. They took Illinois State into 12 innings and finished them off with a walk-off double. The Shockers earned their first MVC win 4-3.
Wichita State earned their first run right off the bat in the first inning. A sacrifice fly by redshirt senior Johnny Coy brought home freshman Tanner Dearman to put the Shockers on the scoreboard. The Redbird tied it up in the second inning at one.
No response from Illinois State thanks to a Shocker double play and Wichita State carried the momentum in to the third inning. Redshirt junior outfielder Garrett Bayliff connected with a single to left field and that brought home sophomore Tyler Baker. The Shockers had a short-lived lead 2-1 heading in to the fourth inning.
The Redbirds earned two more runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead but the Shockers responded with one more to tie the game at three. Neither team could get it going on offense and the Shockers headed in to extra innings.
In the 12th inning WSU finished it. Bayliff and junior Dayne Parker hit two consecutive singles before freshman Joe Haddox hit a double to left centerfield. He batted in Bayliff and gave the Shockers the the 4-3 victory. Senior pitcher TJ Greevy earned the win and advances to 2-1. He helped his team advance to 15-11 overall and 1-0 in the MVC.
The Shockers will finish their series with the Redbirds Saturday, March 30th in a doubleheader. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
