With streamers strewn across Koch Arena, the Marshall Plan had come full circle.
It was all but a foregone conclusion that Wichita State was headed to the Big Dance but around 5:30 Sunday afternoon, it was made official - The Shockers were going to the NCAA Tournament.
"I'm very excited," said Julie Ybarra, a Shocker fan in attendance. "A five seed is great for the Shockers!"
Wichita State will play VCU in the first round. The game is Thursday at 6:15pm in Portland, Oregon, You can watch it on KWCH 12.
It's the Shockers first trip to the NCAA Tournament in six years, a chance the Wichita State faithful has been waiting not so patiently for.
"What a great set of fans we have and how exciting it is to be a part of all this," said Eric Sexton, WSU Athletic Director.
"I think a five seed couldn't have worked out better for the Shockers," said Eric Fahnestock.
With hundreds of fan packed into Koch Arena for the celebration watch party, the atmosphere was electric. But when it was announced that their opponent would be VCU, a team they lost to last season on a controversial call, the Roundhouse might have melted down.
"Love playing VCU again," said Fahnestock. "Love getting the chance for some revenge there and then getting Indiana is a great opportunity."
"Pretty excited about the revenge factor - I think it will be fun," said Shocker fan Dustin Meier. "I think it will be fun to knock them out of the tournament."
Meier won't be making the trip to Portland, he said he has to work.
Portland isn't exactly Omaha or Saint Louis, but Shocker Nation will be in full force by tipoff, no matter where they play.
