The Kings owners have asked the NBA for more time to consider moving the team out of Sacramento.

League rules state a team wishing to relocate for the next season must inform the NBA of its intentions by March 1st.  Joe and Gavin Maloof, majority owners of the Kings, have requested the NBA extend that deadline as they consider their options for the franchise.

According to Tim Frank of the NBA, “The Board is currently considering the Kings request.”  If the league approves the extension request, which seems very likely, the Maloofs intend, according to Frank, to present their options at the NBA Board of Governors meeting on April 14 and 15. The Board is comprised of a representative from every team in the league.

NBA Commissioner David Stern confirmed last weekend the Maloofs interest in moving the team to the Honda Center in Carson, near Anaheim in southern California.

Although, it has been widely speculated that the Maloofs have already decided to move the team, a Kings official told me Wednesday night the owners are still doing their “due diligence”, and both scenarios, staying in Sacramento and moving to Carson, are still being considered.
