Tiffany Joh will be easy to spot at the Kia Classic at La Costa Resort and Spa Thursday - she'll be the one with the big smile on her face.
“It's going to be really cool,” Joh said. “At the same time it's kind of weird because I almost feel like it's an off-week because I'm sleeping in my own bed, and I can go to the same taco stand I normally go to, and get my Starbucks from the same Starbucks I normally go to.
“So it's almost hard to get myself in the mindset. Like, ‘Alright this is a tournament week.’”
Regardless of what the week brings, Joh seems to have the mindset that she will have a good time.
The 25-year-old wears a perma-grin on the golf course and she shows even more of her playful side in her homemade YouTube videos where she raps.
Joh's songs have received quite a bit of attention, along with her game. She finished 41st on the money list in her rookie year last season, yet still can't believe she made it this far.
“Even though I am competing against some of these girls, I'm still a fan at heart,” Joh said. “It's funny, because I still get star-struck when I play practice rounds with Laura Davies or something like that. So I don't think it has completely sunk in yet.”
Joh has walked the La Costa Resort course in a pro tournament before. She said she carried the score sign during the 2003 Accenture Match Play tournament, and she remembers exactly who played.
“I think I was just so star struck the entire time that I wasn't even paying attention to the shots. And it was Adam Scott, so who's really looking at his swing, right?”
Joh said she has worked on her swing recently and maybe spending tournament week in her hometown will help her get her first victory on tour.
“I think that would be amazing,” Joh said. “I keep telling people this is almost like myU.S. Openbecause it's right here in my backyard and my family is going to be able to come out, and all of them are going to watch me play professionally for the first time. So it would be great (to win), but at the same time, I'm not really getting ahead of myself.”
Her Thursday tee time is 8:55 a.m.
