The Big East will add five new members, including San Diego State University, perhaps as soon as Wednesday.

Sources have confirmed to The Courant that Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, Central Florida and SMU will be added. Boise State and San Diego State will be football-only members, while the three other schools will join in all sports.

The conference continues to pursue Navy and Air Force as football members, but the institutions are undecided.

The Big East is losing Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC and West Virginia to the Big 12. Conference leaders hoped to increase football membership to 12, but this first round of expansion will boost the football side to 10.

The presence of Boise State, ranked eighth in the Associated Press poll and seventh in the BCS standings, is vital as the Big East attempts to retain its status as an automatic qualifying conference in the BCS.

SDSU official's responded "No comment" when asked Tuesday about the report.

West Virginia (23rd) is the only Big East school in the BCS standings.
