BRAWLEY — Samantha Estes, an Imperial Valley Desert Aquatics swimmer, has already qualified for consideration to the 2013 Far Western Championship.
“What I do in the pool is a reflection of how hard I work,” said Estes about her efforts.
Moreover, Estes said that her team keeps her motivated, and the team has become 10 times better with the help of their coach.
The competition is fierce, but Estes said that she is both excited about the competition and the fact that other teams from out of town are taking notice of Imperial Valley Desert Aquatics.
Many of the swimmers that came out for the two-day swim meet held at the city pool here were excited and hoping to qualify for Far Western and hopefully move on the Junior Olympics.
The Imperial Valley Desert Aquatic team hosted the event. Parents and local businesses helped sponsor the event. Swim teams came down from San Diego, Temecula, and Yuma, just to name a few.
The meet held 70 events with 170 swimmers from age 5 to 43 years of age.
This is the second year that the IVDA team has hosted the event. Coach Troy Reister started the year-round swim team about five years ago.
“I decided I wanted to build a team here, and now we are about 75 swimmers strong,” said Reister.
“It is a great meet. The local team is very supportive and professional,” said Rod Bigg, a San Diego resident and parent of one of the swimmers on the Mission Valley YMCA team.
Paralympics swimmer Michael DeMarco was one of the swimmers that competed in the meet over the weekend. DeMarco has made more than 150 American records on the paralympics level. He received the bronze medal from the paralympics in Greece 2004 for the 50-meter breaststroke.
DeMarco took up swimming with the encouragement and support of his wife, Karen DeMarco.
Karen was the first disabled swimmer from Helix High School in La Mesa.
“Swimming is something that keeps me in good shape, because of my cerebral palsy,” said DeMarco.
DeMarco likes the camaraderie he gets from his teammates and local swimmers.
The meet in Brawley is the beginning of the summer season for the IVDA team.
