Calif. horse racing moves to ban steroids

The California Horse Racing Board has unanimously adopted a regulation that effectively bans anabolic steroids in horses running in the state, paving the way for the Breeders' Cup to be run steroid-free in the fall at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. The board moved the anabolic steroids testosterone, boldenone, nandrolone, and stanozolol into a higher classification, so that, without exception, any steroid violation will result in the disqualification of the horse. Under new penalties, violations could result in a minimum 30-day suspension.

•WNBAThe Washington Mystics fired Tree Rollins as coach and promoted assistant Jessie Kenlaw to the position on an interim basis. The Mystics went 8-14 this season under Rollins, who became coach last June. ... Playing on a court laid on top of the tennis court at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, Katie Douglas scored nine of her 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Indiana Fever beat the New York Liberty, 71-55, in the league's first outdoor game.

•SoccerD.C. United midfielder Marcelo Gallardo and defender Gonzalo Peralta had hernia operations this weekend in Munich, Germany, and both Major League Soccer players are expected to need two to three weeks to recover.
