Canadiens rally for OT win

Tom Kostopoulos scored 48 seconds into overtime to give the host Montreal Canadiens a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers last night in the opening game of their second-round series.

Kostopoulos put his own rebound past Martin Biron shortly after a faceoff in Philadelphia's zone for his third goal of the playoffs.

Montreal's Alexei Kovalev tied the game with 28.6 seconds left in regulation, scoring his third goal of the playoffs. It came off a faceoff with goalie Carey Price pulled for an extra attacker on a power play.

Flyers center Jeff Carter's stick broke as he lost the faceoff to Saku Koivu, and Kovalev beat Biron with a shot into the top right corner.

Joffrey Lupul scored a power-play goal 19 seconds into the third to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead. The puck came out of Price's glove and hit Lupul's hand before going into the net off the Flyers forward's skate.

Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau kept Price on the bench for a sixth attacker as Montreal began a power play in the Flyers' zone with 1:09 remaining after Philadelphia's Mike Richards was sent off for kneeing Kovalev. The strategy ultimately paid off as Kovalev scored to send the game to overtime.

• Red Wings 4, Avalanche 3 // Johan Franzen scored two goals and had an assist to help Detroit build a three-goal cushion, and the host Red Wings held on to beat Colorado in Game 1 of their second-round series. Franzen's second goal early in the second put Detroit ahead 4-1, but the Avalanche pulled within a goal by the end of the period. Detroit's Chris Osgood made 18 saves. The Avalanche pulled Jose Theodore after he gave up four goals on 16 shots, and later said he was sent to the team hotel because he was sick. Peter Budaj gave the Avalanche a chance to come back by stopping all 20 shots he faced. Game 2 is tomorrow afternoon in Detroit.
