Pens top Senators, 4-1, take 3-0 series lead

Sidney Crosby, Jordan Staal and Marian Hossa scored in the third period to lift the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators last night, taking a 3-0 lead in their first-round series.

Game 4 is tomorrow night at Scotiabank Place.

Crosby scored the tiebreaking goal 12 seconds into the third, stunning the Senators' crowd with his first goal of the playoffs after busting in on a 2-on-1 break and snapping a shot that beat Martin Gerber stick side.

Ottawa couldn't capitalize on the return of injured captain Daniel Alfredsson, a surprise addition to the Senators' lineup. Alfredsson, who hadn't played since he was injured April 3, was given a standing ovation when he took his first shift 42 seconds into the first period.

• Predators 5, Red Wings 3 // Jason Arnott scored with 3:58 left in the final period, the second Nashville goal in nine seconds, and the host Predators rallied to beat Detroit to get back into the first-round series. Ryan Suter tied the game just nine seconds earlier, putting a slap shot from the left side past Dominik Hasek, who had dominated the Predators for most of the game and the series. Martin Erat scored an empty-netter with 41 seconds left to seal the come-from-behind win. Nashville, which trails 2-1, will look to tie the series in Game 4 tomorrow night, and the series will then shift back to Detroit on Friday.

Off the ice

• Rule change // The Rangers' Sean Avery held his stick upward and waved it side to side while facing Devils goalie Martin Brodeur to block his vision during New Jersey's win Sunday. The NHL moved quickly to eliminate this activity by making an on-the-fly rule interpretation. "An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play," Colin Campbell, the NHL director of hockey operations said in a statement.
