The South Hagerstown baseball team came out hot until a heavy rainstorm cooled it off.
The Rebels scored in every inning and starting pitcher Airin Martin had a perfect game through three innings for a 12-0 lead against Watkins Mill before it was halted by rain on Friday in a Maryland Class 3A West playoff opener.
The game is scheduled to resume today at noon with the winner traveling to meet Damascus on Monday.
Leadoff hitter Timmy Kitchen had three hits and Colby Johnson hit a two-run home run in a five-run third inning.
South scored three runs in the first and four in the second to get out to the early lead. The Rebels have eight hits in the game.
Martin retired the first nine Watkins Mill hitters he faced — including six by strikeout — on 34 pitches.
-- In Class 1A West, Boonsboro took a 5-0 lead over host Smithsburg in the top of the first inning before rain caused play to be suspended in the top of the second.
Plans are to resume the game today at noon at Smithsburg.
The Warriors did their damage on four hits and a hit batter in the first.
Zach Poffenberger led off with a bloop single to center before Smithsburg starter Josh Miller hit Brad Enfield with an errant curve.
After a double steal put both runners in scoring position, Scott Bennett follwed with an RBI infield single into the hole at short, scoring Poffenberger to get Boonsboro on the board.
Miller struck out Evan Pettyjohn for the first out, but Luke Harsh blasted a three-run home run to right to make it 4-0. Miller got Dalton Stewart to fly out to center, but Ryan Ruiz followed with a solo homer to left for a 5-0 advantage.
Bennett started on the mound for the Warriors and walked leadoff hitter Zack Krall before retiring the side on a flyout to center and two strikeouts on breaking pitches.
-- In Class 2A West, Wheaton and Williamsport only completed a half inning before having play suspended.
Wheaton had a scoreless first inning, striking out twice and having one hitter reach on a walk before he was caught stealing.
The game is scheduled to resume today at 10 a.m.
Flint Hill 9, Saint James 2
OAKTON, Va. — Flint Hill scored five runs in the fourth inning to pull away from Saint James in a Mid-Atlantic Conference game.
Patrick Morris had two hits and scored two runs for the Saints (13-9, 6-6). Stephen Hart hit an RBI single and Bobby Brennan added an RBI groundout.
Southern Garrett 4, Hancock 3
HANCOCK — Southern Garrett plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to edge Hancock in the Maryland Class 1A West first round.
Jessica Martin had two hits and two RBIs and Courtney Royce had two hits for the Panthers (9-9).
South Western 2, Waynesboro 1
WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Cheyenne Henning had a double for Waynesboro (10-9) in a loss to South Western that was called after five innings due to rain.
North Hagerstown 13, Rockville 10
ROCKVILLE, Md. — Drew Brooks had six goals and an assist to lead North Hagerstown past Rockville in the Maryland Class 3A/2A West quarterfinals.
Brandon Brown had three goals and three assists, Dylan Brown had two goals and an assist, Kyle Hewlett had a goal and an assist, Reggie Daniel had a goal, Reed Jimenez had two assists and Brian Davis had 17 saves for the Hubs (9-5).
Friday’s Class 2A/1A West quarterfinal game between Smithsburg and Oakdale was rained out.
The game has been rescheduled for today at noon at Oakdale.
Mercersburg 14, Madeira 13
MERCERSBURG, Pa. — Alyson Kinney had five goals and three assists to lead Mercersburg Academy past Madiera on Thursday.
Gabby Cuzzola had three goals and three assists, Amanda Broyles had three goals, Hanna Warfield had two goals and an assist, Maddy Shearer had a goal and an assist and Megan Lafferty made 13 saves for the Blue Storm.
