BUCKHANNON, W.Va. —Adam Neugebauer completed 41 of 66 passes for 412 yards and six touchdowns to lead West Virginia Wesleyan to a 46-45 win in overtime over Shepherd University in West Virginia Conference action Saturday.
The Bobcats (6-0, 3-0) scored first in overtime on a 21-yard pass from Neugebauer to T.J. Benners. Philip Warner added what proved to be the winning point.
Shepherd (4-2, 2-2) answered on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Bobby Cooper to tight end John Frick. Eric Dobratz hit the extra point, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty was called. The Rams opted to go for two points and Tommy Addison was stopped short of the goal line.
Shepherd lost for the second straight week after a 4-0 start to the season.
The Rams took a 7-0 lead on a 14-yard touchdown scamper by Mike Haynes with 7:12 left in the first quarter. Dobratz added the extra point. The score was set up by an interception by linebacker Maurice Perry.
The Bobcats (6-0, 3-0) answered minutes later on a 21-yard field goal by Warner to cut the lead to 7-3.
Neugebauer hit Corey Williams on a 6-yard scoring pass with 12:13 left in the second quarter to give the Bobcats a 9-7 lead. Rams sophomore Howard Jones blocked the extra point attempt.
Shepherd regained the lead at 14-9 when Addison raced 59 yards for a score with 7:50 left in the second quarter.
W.Va. Wesleyan gained the lead back at 17-14 when Neugebauer hit Keith Dickens on a 5-yard scoring pass with 3:59 left in the half. Neugebauer found Stephen Campbell for the two-point conversion.
The Bobcats took a 24-14 lead into the break when Neugebauer found Williams on a 24-yard scoring strike with seven seconds left.
Addison broke outside and went 14 yards for a score with eight minutes left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 24-21.
Shepherd took a 28-24 lead when Cooper found Frick wide open on a 67-yard scoring play with 6:47 left in the third.
The Rams stretched their lead to 35-24 when junior Robert Byrd ran down the sideline for a 29-yard TD run with 1:45 left in the quarter.
Dobratz nailed a 21-yard field goal with with 8:16 left in the game to give Shepherd a 38-24 lead.
Neugebauer and Campbell combined on a 10-yard scoring play minutes later to cut the lead to 38-31. Then Neugebauer found Campbell again on a 12-yard scoring pass with to tie the game at 38 with 3:30 remaining.
Cooper completed 20 of 33 passes for 297 yards for the Rams. Addison rushed 30 times for 153 yards. Frick had three catches for 98 yards.
Jon Meadows had 13 receptions for 149 yards for the Bobcats.
