* Broadfording’s girls (5-7, 4-3) took control with a 13-4 third-quarter run that turned a 16-16 halftime tie with Grace Academy (4-9, 2-5) into a 29-20 lead. Connolly caught the Knights napping with a four-point play, as she scored a layup and was fouled, then missed the free throw but grabbed the rebound and scored when no one else reacted, thinking she was shooting two free throws.
Broadfording raised its lead to as many as 12 points early in the fourth quarter before Grace used numerous foul calls on the Lions to climb back in the game late. Caitllin Cox scored all 10 of her points in the final period to help give the Knights a chance.
Kelsey Koontz — who led Grace with 21 points and 15 rebounds — made two free throws with 10.5 seconds left to cut the lead to two. Broadfording’s Aspen Flook then missed an ill-timed shot with six seconds left, but Connolly chased down the rebound and held the ball as the clock ran out.
“I reminded the girls of what Coach (John) Wooden said: ‘There’s only three things you can control — your choices, your attitude and your effort,’” said Broadfording coach Shawn Burgener.
Grace made just 7 of 21 free throw attempts in the game.
The Knights committed 11 turnovers in the first quarter to fall behind 8-4, but took control behind Koontz in the second. She scored the Knights’ first 10 points of the period — giving her Grace’s first 14 in the game — and Grace used a 12-3 run to take a 16-11 lead.
Connolly hit a 3-pointer and drove for a layup to pull Broadfording into a 16-16 tie at halftime.
“She made some heads-up plays, but this has to be about Broadfording basketball and not Katie Connolly,” Burgener said. “Our goal for the rest of the year is to get her help.”
* Sallah had two thunderous dunks early and Broadfording’s boys took the drama out of the nightcap early, outscoring Grace 26-5 in the first quarter and 47-13 in the first half.
The Lions (10-8, 7-0) placed four players in double figures. Moni Anderson had 15 points, Jeff Lopez 13 and Derek Durst 12 to support Sallah. Broadfording made 10 3-pointers.
Shawn Price had 12 points and Peter Hykes scored 11 for Grace (3-12, 1-6).
