Players to watch: Boys basketball

LARRY BASTFIELD
Towson Catholic, guard

With the 6-foot Bastfield at point guard the past two seasons, the Owls have won 59 games. Bastfield averaged 12 points, five assists, three steals and four rebounds for last year's No. 1 team. The senior has signed with Toledo.

TROY FRANKLIN

Mount Carmel, guard

Franklin, 5 feet 10, averaged 15.5 points, four assists and 2.5 steals as a junior for the Cougars and was named All-Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference. His play for the Baltimore Stars Amateur Athletic Union team last spring and summer raised his stock, and he chose Towson University out of a dozen scholarship offers.

BRANDON GREENE
Towson Catholic, forward

While playing in the shadows of his cousin, Donte Greene, and Malcolm Delaney last season,Greene, 6-6, averaged 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. The senior, who will start for a third season, is an aggressive force in the paint. He has received scholarship offers from several Division I schools, including Loyola and Robert Morris.

J.J. HICKS
Broadneck, forward

Hicks has drawn interest from several colleges to play football as a receiver or a defensive back, but also is skilled on the basketball court, where he led the Bruins to the Anne Arundel County championship last year. Hicks, 6-2, averaged 18.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists last year as a junior and was named to the All-Metro second team.

SEAN MOSLEY
St. Frances, forward-guard

The Maryland-bound Mosley, a three-time All-Metro selection entering his senior season, is ranked No. 60 in the Rivals.com Top 150 for the class of 2008 and No. 13 for shooting guards. Mosley, 6-4, averaged 21 points, eight rebounds, six assists, four steals and 3.5 blocks. The area's best all-around player, he can score by posting up or shooting threes.

ISAIAH PHILMORE
John Carroll, forward

A second-team All-Metro player as a sophomore last year, Philmore, 6-7, is the centerpiece of the upstart Patriots. Philmore averaged 15.9 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals. He is ranked 69th nationally in the Rivals.com Top 150 for the class of 2009, No. 24 as a power forward. He already has scholarship offers from Virginia Tech, George Washington, Miami, Marquette and Rhode Island.
