Black, Markwordt help Glenelg claim crown
Gladiators' magical midfield fuels high-octane half
Glenelg's Kristy Black and Alayna Markwordt proved an unbeatable combination in last night's state Class 2A-1A girls lacrosse championship.
The senior midfielders had a record-setting night, combining for 21 points as the No. 12 Gladiators defeated Loch Raven, 17-11, at UMBC Stadium for their second state title in four years.
The teammates connected with one another five times, including twice in a six-goal Gladiators run that ended the first half and gave them the lead for good.
"They've been a good combination all season long. They find each other," Glenelg coach Ginger Kincaid said. "They've known each other for years, and that's something you don't coach. That's something they've grown up doing."
Black finished with six goals and five assists while Markwordt had six goals and four assists - each breaking a 16-year-old record of nine points in a Class 2A-1A final set by Loch Raven's Michele DeJuliis. Black tied the record for most assists set by Mount Hebron's Kristen Waagbo in 2002.
The Gladiators (16-4) also broke a Class 2A-1A record for total goals scored in the semifinal and final games with 40.
That run at the end of the first half, in which Glenelg scored six times in 5 minutes, 48 seconds, was a roadblock for the Raiders (12-4), who got four goals each from Gabi Miller and Taylor Moyer and played the Gladiators evenly the rest of the game.
"Defensively, we weren't communicating very well," Raiders coach Danielle Grzebien said. "We weren't marking up. We weren't finding the free girl - and draw possessions. We just didn't possess the ball."
After Glenelg took a 6-5 lead on Black's goal from Markwordt, Kincaid moved Black to center to take the draws, and the Gladiators won every one over the taller Raiders the rest of the half.
Loch Raven got as close as 13-9 on back-to-back goals by Moyer with 12:54 to go, but Markwordt answered with two goals and then fed Black to make it 16-9 with 5:19 to go.
